22nd July 2004 BRAZILIAN WANDERING SPIDER Not Known

BRAZILIAN WANDERING SPIDER
One of the most dangerous spiders in the world has been found hiding among bananas on a market stall in Walsall. Brazilian Wandering Spiders (Phoneutria fera) are normally found roaming forest floors in South America. They grow to five inches in diameter, and are fast moving, very aggressive, and extremely venomous.

The stallholder caught the spider in a plastic carrier bag, and took it to Dudley Zoo where it was identified. It has now been transferred to Stratford Butterfly Farm.
