BEAVERS
The plan
to re-introduce beavers unto the river valleys of the Borders has been delayed
due to the complaints from local farmers concerned about possible damage to
their crops. After an absence of 400 years, the proposed re-introduction of
12-15 European beavers from Norway has been held up pending further research.
During the past 40 years, there have been 90 reallocations in over 20 European countries except Britain, Portugal and Italy.
A trustee
of the BFT said
“The trust has not adapted a stance on the re-introduction of the beaver,
but in the long term the Borders could certainly be considered as a suitable
area”
