LOBSTER
Lobster Keeps Watch on
Seabed.
A lobster is keeping watch on a seabed, divers reported. The divers were doing
maintenance work in a harbour when they discovered a giant lobster guarding
a barnacle-encrusted watch. The 2 foot lobster, which is thought to be more
than 30 years of age, was spotted by members from a diving club located at
Blyth Harbour, Northumberland. When they looked closer, they were shocked
to see that the ancient crustacean appeared to be guarding a wristwatch. Amazingly,
when the divers returned to the surface, they discovered that the watch, a
Citizen Pulsar, was still telling the time accurately to within a few seconds.
A member of the Lady Francis Dive Team, Graham McDonnar said that they had
estimated the watch to have been under water for at least three years due
to its condition. What amazed them most was that it wasn't even a waterproof
model.
They are all experienced
divers and none of them have seen anything like it before. They said that
it was the biggest lobster any of them had ever seen, but it was the first
sea creature they had encountered that could tell the time.
The lobster was taken
to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth where it is settling in well in the
harbour tank display.
Zahra d'Aronville from
the Blue Reef said that lobsters were well known for being extremely territorial,
and perhaps it identified it as being part of its territory, and has been
guarding it ever since.

MARTENS
Marten Alien invasion
A recent report says that six Martens killed on roads in Northumberland
where they seem to have been thriving, were sent ot Notts University for DNA
identification, four of those six were in fact not as expected our Pine Marten
(Martes martes) but its American cousin, the American Marten (Martes americana)
this was further supported by the lack of its yellow chest patch. These must
have come in a shipment of mink years ago and escaped, as records of mink
imports did not start until 1962 and Northumberland have had no mink imports
for over 20 years now.
