Woman finds snake in her trainer
The RSPCA are looking for the owner of a snake after a woman found it curled up in her trainer. Susan McGarrity discovered the Californian kingsnake as she went to put on her trainers at her home in Liverpool. Husband, Steven, put the snake into a pillowcase and called the police who then contacted a tropical wildlife centre and the RSPCA.

Mr McGarrity told the Daily Post: "My wife got up, came downstairs and going to the cupboard under the stairs she found a large snake. "The snake was curled up in her trainers and it was quite long and big. It was very dark brown with white stripes". A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "The RSPCA went to the house to collect the snake, so if anyone has lost it they should contact their local police station who will put them in touch with them."

An RSPCA spokesman says they will ask the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to house the snake if nobody claims it. Californian Kingsnakes, which aren't poisonous, are kept as pets and can cost between £60 and £70 to buy.

CORN SNAKE

Bobby Steve has a slippery customer
By Mike Hornby
BOBBY Stephen Randall has come across a few slippery characters during his 28 years in the police. But nothing prepared him
for the sight of a corn snake which found its way into Hoylake police station
The snake, named Slippery Sid by officers, had
either crawled through the letterbox of the station door or through some piping and was found by a cleaner.

PC Randall said: "We were about to open up the station when the porter went into the front foyer. I heard him shout 'there's a snake' and when I peered round there it was, all curled up. "I thought it was a practical joke, some sort of rubber toy. But low and behold the thing jumped up and hissed at me. I got out quick and shut the door behind me." The RSPCA asked Val Longman, of Hoylake reptile club, to collect the animal and make sure it was in a healthy condition. Val, who is an RSPCA foster parent, immediately recognised the colouring of the reptile and was able to track the breeder. She then discovered the snake had been roaming around Hoylake for six months.

Val said: "Snakes are escape artists, no matter how young they are they will get out of their cage any way they can. "Sid escaped back in February - it's a miracle that he has survived in the wild for this long. "Corn snakes are lovely, friendly animals and the most popular snake to have as pets. Sid wouldn't have hurt anybody"
